More Details About Bodhiology
Wilhelm Wundt founded
psychology as a separate science in 1879, isolating it from philosophy. The
Buddha appeared in 600 BC, and left a large collection of teachings. Based on
those teachings, writers produce books on Buddhism, mostly as works on Buddhist
philosophy and religion. When I examine the Buddha’s teachings, I come to
discover their preoccupation with the affairs of our minds and behaviors. That
discovery led me to a very ambitious idea. What if I write a textbook on
psychology based on the Buddha’s teachings. As Wilhelm Wundt separated
psychology from philosophy, why should I not isolate psychological concepts and
methods from other aspects of those teachings and systemize them for modern
readers? Bodhiology is the fruit of having brought that ambitious idea to
reality.
Bodhiology is the psychology of
consciousness models. In the first book of Abhidhamma
(Extreme Teachings), the Buddha deconstructed every consciousness type
available to us. In my work, I used the deconstructed components as the building
blocks to reconstruct consciousness models and rearrange them in their
evolutionary order. I also took initiative to provide and discuss all the
necessary links between them – links either as concepts or methods not explicit
in that first book.
Are consciousness models
reconstructed just for the intellectual exercise? Of course not. We can put them
to practical use. One of their uses is to explain any sentient phenomenon. The
phenomena such as creativity, scientific activity, signal processing, message
decoding, miracles, genius and the like can be adequately explained in the light
of the consciousness models.
The function of bodhiology is,
however, more than to explain. Its methods are to put us in charge of any
consciousness model. As they can help us discard any consciousness model we are
through with, so can they facilitate upkeep or attainment of those we like.
Anyone who has mastered and can manipulate consciousness models is the one in a
position to be able to manipulate their behaviors as the latter originate from
the former. Bodhiology aims to help us discover healthy behaviors, internalize
them and change them into perfect behaviors (sammā
kammanto, etc).
If consciousness models are
under our control, we are in charge of our behaviors. If our behaviors are under
our control, we can leave or choose any behavior as we please. As mastery of
consciousness models makes it a breeze to break any unhealthy, chronic habits,
so can it make it easier for us to adopt healthy behaviors that are efficient,
economical, elegant, precise, untiring, liberating – behaviors that are
progressive cranes for internalizing more advanced consciousness models. Once we
are able to make our consciousness models and behaviors mutually advance one
another, we embark on the path of perfection (sammā
maggo) which climaxes with awakening, the ultimate psychological
change.
Bodhiology is the psychology of awakening – psychology specializing in concepts and methods for ultimate psychological change and perfect behaviors. Why on earth would one need such ultimate psychological change as awakening? To transcend those habitual consciousness models and behaviors which make us live the lives of puppets, of somnambulists. Bodhiology is the most effective psychology to expose and demolish stereotypes, conditioned states, existential programming, social hypnosis, societal puppetry, cosmic somnambulism.
Bodhiology is the first
systematic attempt to transform Abhidhamma into a modern applied discipline. It
is the applied Abhidhamma.
The term ‘Buddha’ refers to one
who has awakening, has liberated oneself from sentient programming, societal
conditioning and cosmic somnambulism, and teaches us how to do likewise.
Bodhiology is the most ambitious psychology to show any willing seeker how to
attain the consciousness and behaviors of a Buddha, an awakener.
